  • 2026 brackets are the same as tax year 2025 (Act 46, SLH 2024; DOTAX Announcement 2024-03: 'The income tax brackets will be the same as in tax year 2025'). Married filing separately uses the single schedule (Schedule I); qualifying surviving spouse uses the joint schedule.
  • Standard deduction 2026: $8,000 single/MFS, $16,000 MFJ/surviving spouse, $12,000 head of household (Act 46; DOTAX Announcement 2024-03 and DOTAX FAQ). 2025 was $4,400/$8,800/$6,424.
  • Personal exemption $1,144 per exemption (taxpayer, spouse, each dependent), plus an additional $1,144 exemption if age 65+. A certified blind/deaf/totally disabled taxpayer takes a $7,000 disability exemption in lieu of the $1,144 exemption (DOTAX FAQ).
  • Act 35 (2026) conforms Hawaii to the IRC as amended Dec 31, 2025 for taxable years beginning after Dec 31, 2025, INCLUDING the IRC §224 qualified tips deduction (up to $25,000) but NOT the IRC §225 overtime deduction or the §163(h) car-loan interest deduction (DOTAX Announcement 2026-06).
  • Withholding uses a different (lower, capped at 7.9%) rate table than the actual tax schedules — see withholding.

How Hawaii withholding works

Employee form: Form HW-4 Employee's Withholding Allowance and Status Certificate (federal W-4 may NOT be used)

Employer guide: Hawaii DOTAX Booklet A, Employer's Tax Guide (Rev. 2025) — 'effective as of December 5, 2025 for withholding January 1, 2026 and thereafter'; Appendix Part 1 (annualized method) p.20, Part 2 (per-period formula) pp.21+, Part 3 tables

Annualized method: annual wages − (HW-4 allowances × $1,144) − $4,350 extra lump-sum allowance → apply 2026 annual withholding table (Single incl. HOH: 1.4% to $9,600, 3.2% to $14,400, 5.5% to $19,200, 6.4% to $24,000, 6.8% to $36,000, 7.2% to $48,000, 7.6% to $125,000, 7.9% above; Married: same rates with thresholds doubled, 7.9% above $250,000) → divide by pay periods. HOH must be treated as Single. No HW-4 → single, zero allowances. Not required to withhold less than $0.10.

The calculator above applies this 2026 formula line by line (open “How Hawaii withholding was figured” in the results), using the Form HW-4 Employee's Withholding Allowance and Status Certificate entries you choose.
